abstract = "RESUMO: O presente estudo analisa as frentes quentes que ocorrem
na regi{\~a}o Sudeste da Am{\'e}rica do Sul (entre 20°S e 35°S)
no per{\'{\i}}odo 2001 a 2010.
m{\'{\i}}nimo de 2 K/100km.
quente. Para essa finalidade utilizaram-se os dados de
rean{\'a}lises do Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR/NCEP),
latitude: 20°S a 25°S, 26°S a 30°S e 31°S a 35°S. Tamb{\'e}m
No per{\'{\i}}odo
Am{\'e}rica do Sul, conforme a metodologia empregada. O m{\^e}s
(Abril-Maio-Junho) e inverno (Julho-Agosto-Setembro) tiveram 34,5%
ocorr{\^e}ncia das frentes quentes na regi{\~a}o estudada {\'e}
per{\'{\i}}odos em que pouqu{\'{\i}}ssimas frentes quentes
s{\~a}o observadas.
As frentes quentes ocorreram geralmente
A menor ocorr{\^e}ncia no ver{\~a}o
em compara{\c{c}}{\~a}o com as outras esta{\c{c}}{\~o}es do
ano possivelmente deve-se a diminui{\c{c}}{\~a}o do m{\'o}dulo
do gradiente de \θe em fun{\c{c}}{\~a}o da grande
quantidade de radia{\c{c}}{\~a}o solar incidente nesta
{\'e}poca do ano. ABSTRACT: The present study analyzes the warm
fronts that occur in the Southeast South America region (between
20°S and 35°S), in the 2001 to 2010 period. An objective method
was used to identify the systems that takes into account the
equivalent potential temperature (\θe) meridional gradient
magnitude, which should have a minimum value of 2 K/100km. The
area with this minimum gradient should move south, persisting for
at least one day, always with a cyclonic variation of winds from
rear to the front of the warm front. To this aim Climate Forecast
System Reanalysis (CFSR/NCEP) data were used, with 0.5° of
horizontal spacing, in the 850 hPa level. The cases were accounted
and divided, by region of origin of the warm front, in three
latitude ranges: 20°S to 25°S, 26°S to 30°S and 31°S to 35°S.
Cases in which a cyclone developed after or during the front
acting and the cases of systems that emerged on the west end of
cold or stationary fronts, as an extension of these, were
accounted too. In the studied period 220 warm front cases occurred
in Southeast South America, according to the methodology used. The
month with more cases was June (16.4% of the records), and that
with less cases was February (2.7%). The quarters of autumn
(April-May-June) and winter (July-August-September) had 34.5% and
34.1% of the cases, respectively. Almost half of the systems
identified (46.8%) formed between 26°S and 30°S, whereas in the
ranges of 20°S to 25°S (30°S to 35°S) were originated 29.1%
(24.1%) of the warm fronts. Among the accounted events, 66.8% were
related with extratropical cyclones formation in the region, and
49.5% emerged as extension of cold or stationary fronts that
retreated south as warm fronts. The average frequency of warm
front occurrence in the studied region is of one front every 16.6
days, being higher in the quarter April-May-June (a front every 12
days). It was also noted that the occurrence of the systems follow
a wavelike pattern, with periods in which the frequency of events
increases greatly, and other periods when very few warm fronts are
observed. The results suggest that warm fronts are frequent
synoptic systems in southeast of South America, especially in
winter, when the troposphere is more baroclinic in the region. The
formation of these systems is closely related to the cyclogenesis
that occurs in subtropical latitudes of South America,
particularly in the colder months of the year. Warm fronts usually
occurred on the eastern edge of the climatological low pressure
system in northeastern Argentina, being located on the axis of a
trough associated with this low. The lower incidence in summer
compared to other seasons of the year is possibly due to decreased
\θe gradient magnitude in function of the large amount of
solar radiation incident at this time of year.",
